The often small, low to the ground table placed in front of a sofa in your main living area is generally referred to as a coffee table. As the name implies, this piece of furniture was originally meant to hold drinks, but now is a multi-functional piece of furniture that can be used how ever you like. It can be a simple part of your interior designing, or it can be a very functional item in your everyday life.

A wooden table will probably work best for those homes which are more traditionally and simply decorated. These are by far the most common style. Of course, the personal style of your room needs to be considered when acquiring your own coffee table. Balance is important, so you coffee table should match your pre-existing furnishings.
Another popular choice is a glass coffee table. These give the appearance of refinement with a modern look. Also if your room is small, a glass topped table can open up the room by allowing light to travel through it, whereas an opaque table will not.
Today, the sky is the limit as to what your table is made from and how it is designed. Upholstered ottomans are growing in popularity as coffee tables. Modern styled cube-like tables are also coming into their own.
One special concern is for homes that have children living in them. Many coffee tables are made of hard materials with sharp edges and corners. While not inherently dangerous, children who have not totally mastered walking or who are running through the house could possibly hurt themselves. A coffee table with round edges or made of soft materials might be better to avoid such accidents.
Having installed your coffee table, there is a real possibility that it will become the biggest clutter catcher in your home! Where simple decorations make it look nice, a ton of clutter will make the rest of your home look unorganized and messy. If this will be a problem for your family, a simple basket or small trunk for quick cleanup will be really helpful to have!
