When the term housekeeper is coined, the reference is directed to female domestic helpers. On the other hand, male house help are commonly known as houseboys or housecleaners. In the past, most housekeepers were given proper addresses, like Ms. or if married, Mrs., and were identified by their last names. Most housekeepers were given authority within homes.
It is the role of the housekeeper to segregate the household tasks and to delegate them to the lower servants. This of course depends on the size of the home or the property. There will be servants who are assigned in the kitchen, the laundry, and the bedrooms. The housekeeper is the one tasked to make reports to the homeowners regarding the household chores.
At present times, the idea of what a housekeeper duty was altered. There are some huge homes where the obligation of the housekeeper was retained. She primarily acts like the household's supervisor. But since there aren't so many grand houses within different countries nowadays, she sometimes was simply commissioned to work by herself.
In most modern homes, a housekeeper was hired to do the household tasks alone instead of assigning those to servants who are under her supervision. This is how a modern housekeeper was described.
More than households, commercial establishments like resorts and hotels are in need of housekeepers as well. The housekeeper would need to ensure that the required levels of cleanliness are maintained at all times. The duties also include providing customer service to clients and guests. With most commercial venues, all of these things are in included in a housekeeper duty.
