NLP revolves around the organisation of thought, feeling, behaviour and language and attempts to duplicate successful thought patterns through a process called modelling. Nero Linguistic Programming is based on knowledge of the nervous system, specifically how data is received via the five senses and its effects on the unconscious. You can model your thoughts on those who have been successful and also recognise the limiting patterns you currently possess and improve them.

Grinder and Bandler who discovered and created the method had very little knowledge in this area but soon found when they started to apply these methods that they managed to achieve very positive results. They ran courses to begin teaching these methods to others and again, found the techniques to be successful. These techniques are what is now known as NLP.

When attempting to obtain results with this technique, being in control of one's own mind is the ultimate goal. It has a reputation from causing long-term, positive change. An example of this is The Fast Phobia Cure which Bandler developed. This phobia has been cured in as little as 10-15 minutes. It has also been known to cure fears of flying, heights and public speaking.

Rather then focusing on how and where problems have originated, it is essentially a study of successful people and looking for elements of that success which can be modelled and applied to others so that they can achieve similar results. It attempts to improve the individual in all areas of life rather than just one problematic area.

NLP today uses material from a number of disciplines such as neurology and cognitive psychology and is used in institutions the world over to help people improve themselves. It has also found in textbooks in the fields of health, medicine and more.
